To accommodate late-night studiers this week, the Powell Library
west reading room will be open today through March 21, – from 6
p.m. to 3 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 6 p.m. to midnight on
Fridays.

The program, called "Night Powell," will be staffed with extra
Community Service Officers, all available without a phone call.
They will be on hand, waiting by the flagpole, to escort students
and faculty between 2-3 a.m.

Eleanor Mitchell, head librarian of the College Library,
explained that aside from compensating for the lack of late-night
studying facilities, Powell’s opening is for the benefit of those
who have never been inside.

"We opened this part earlier so that we could respond to a
student’s need of later night study space and we wanted students,
especially graduating students, to experience it (the library)
before they leave," Mitchell said.

Powell, the main undergraduate library, has been closed for
years while it underwent seismic repairs. Additional roof damage
caused by the January 1994 Northridge quake pushed back the opening
date, originally scheduled for spring 1995.

Mitchell added that although the west reading room will close
again after finals week, it will re-open permanently sometime after
the spring term.
