UCLA ice hockey squad

back in rink after hiatus

Of all the sports to take a break for the winter, ice hockey
would seem the least likely to do so. But they did. The UCLA ice
hockey team will play its first game coming out of the break on
Friday.

As UCLA’s season resumes, they find themselves right in the
middle of the stretch run. With a third of the season to go, UCLA
probably needs to win all of its remaining games to earn a spot in
the playoffs.

Doing so might not be as hard as it sounds. Going into the
break, UCLA had gone undefeated in their last four games.

That streak included two victories over USC. The Bruins posted a
comeback victory over the Trojans in late November, coming from 4-2
down to win 5-4. And Dec. 6, UCLA beat USC 5-3.

In the latter game, UCLA came back from a slow start and a 1-0
deficit to score five unanswered goals. Duma Maguile and Chris
Manning scored two goals each, and Andrew Lister added one
goal.

"As the second period rolled along, we picked up our play,"
winger Mike Siegel said. "And by the third period we were just
dominating."

The Bruins experienced a letdown in their game the next day at
San Diego State, and ended up tying the Aztecs, 3-3.

"We were dead tired because we played a real tough game the
night before against ‘SC," Siegel said. "We were just flat the
whole game."

Bruins swim their way

to Speedo Cup win

The UCLA women’s swim team blew past its opponents in the Speedo
Cup, held Dec. 5-7 at UC Irvine.

The Bruins won the 17-team competition with 1,585 points,
outdistancing second-place UC Berkeley by over 400 points.

UCLA winners included Keiko Price in the 100-meter freestyle,
Lindsay Etter in the 200-meter breast stroke and the 400-meter
freestyle relay team.

Results of the Saturday meet against UC San Diego and Michigan
were unavailable late Sunday.

The swim team’s next meet is against Illinois at 2 p.m. Friday
at the Men’s Gym pool.
