Speaks Out

ATHLETES: Intercollegiate athletes at UCLA are entitled to
scholarships,

priority enrollment and tutoring and are able to take exams on
the road. Do you believe that these academic advantages are
fair?

Sahyeh Fattahi

Third Year

Psychology

No because I think those should be based on academics, because
this is an academic school and not whether you can hit a
three-point shot or whatever.

Jean Ji

First Year

Computer Science/ Engineering

I think every student deserves the same amount of opportunity. I
think everybody has the chance to get involved. I don’t think they
have a priority. They’re just regular students.

Nyron Bernard

Fourth Year

Sociology

Track and Field Athlete

Yes. Being an athlete’s very difficult. You’ve got to go to
practice, which takes a long period of time. Getting priority
enrollment is important for scheduling our classes around
practice.

Brian Fishman

First Year

Political Science

Yeah I do. I think that because of what the athletes bring to
the school in terms of spirit and in terms of how they bring
everyone together, they deserve those extras.

Eric Zhao

First Year

Electrical Engineering

No I do not. I believe that these scholarships should be handed
out for more academic reasons and not for athletic abilities. I do
not believe that they should be rewarded in a financial way. They
actually in reality cause a lot of trouble for the school.

Anne De la Cruz

Second Year

English

Sometimes they are fair. It depends which benefits you’re
talking about. As far as classes they need to be flexible. In
reality they bring a lot of money to the school but also it’s a lot
of school spirit that has to do with it. It hypes up everybody, so
it has a dual purpose.
