It keeps going and going and going. No, it’s not the Energizer
Bunny, it’s the UCLA women’s gymnastic team, which continued its
winning streak, taking its eighth consecutive meet and improving
its scores despite the temporary loss of Mohini Bhardwaj and Luisa
Potocarerro, both out with injuries.
Friday was anything but unlucky for the Bruins (8-1) as they
competed against UC Berkeley. UCLA destroyed Cal (5-7) on the road,
195.300-188.700.
While this score is not their best of the season, the Bruins
improved both their averages on the uneven bars and vault.
As a team, the Bruins did not beat their best score but many of
the gymnasts did set personal records.
Sophomore Lena Degteva placed second in the meet for her
all-around score of 39.175, which surpasses her previous season
high by close to a point.
Degteva also placed second for her vault score that tied her
personal season best, 9.750. In the other three events, she placed
third. Fellow sophomore Heidi Moneymaker received a No. 1 ranking
in all-around with a score of 39.375 which ties her season high.
Moneymaker placed first in bars for her fourth consecutive time and
also placed first on floor.
Andrea Fong beat her personal best in all-around competition
that placed her third in this meet with a score of 38.525. Veteran
Stella Umeh succeeded in breaking her record on balance beam this
year when she received a 9.900 that gave her a No. 1 ranking in the
event. Umeh also placed first in vault with a 9.825.
