New grants for computers

Thumbs up to the state board of education for giving the Lennox
School District an $872,744 grant to create a professional
development center for teaching staff, parents and students about
computers and to buy computers for every classroom.

All classrooms in the district have been wired for Internet
access and have integrated the information superhighway into the
curriculum.

The grant will allow the district to add more computers, which
will allow greater access to the students. Students use the
computers for math, reading and social studies.

The development center will train teachers to further integrate
the technology into classrooms and the curriculum.

The grant will help teachers to continue applying technology to
education, and students can benefit greatly. The information
superhighway is yet another avenue for students to learn.

Removing ads to clean up city

Thumbs up to students in Covina for taking the initiative to
better their community. They made a presentation before the city
council and asked to remove all cigarette billboards from the
city.

After hearing pleas from local students about the dangers of
cigarette advertising, members of the city council asked its
planning commission to review Covina’s ordinance on billboards.

Eight students from Sierra Vista Intermediate School made a
presentation to council Feb. 17 regarding four billboards that
advertise tobacco products within the city.

The students want to follow Compton’s example and ban tobacco
ads on billboards.

"I was very impressed with the presentation," said Mayor Thomas
O’Leary. "Each student tackled an issue related to the ban, such as
the First Amendment issues."
