Crimewatch

Students bade a loud farewell to summer during the past two
weeks, with university police and LAPD responding to disturbing the
peace calls all over Westwood and even in the dorms.

Gayley Avenue alone had nine visits from UCPD, and in just one
call, LAPD officers broke up six parties on Landfair Avenue.

Also on Landfair Avenue, multiple subjects were cited for public
drunkenness.

Complaints of parties and loud music totaled 30.

Not everyone on campus was as excited about another quarter of
classes.

UCPD responded to five complaints of fighting, four incidents of
battery and one of assault, as well as three calls to the medical
center to restrain violent patients.

Three suspects made annoying or threatening phone calls, while
two men indecently exposed themselves in public and another
committed lewd acts in a men’s rest room in Kerckhoff Hall.

UCPD officers also received two verbal abuse calls. At Juice
Star in Westwood, a disgruntled customer demanded change from a
purchase made a day earlier, and in the Center for Health Sciences,
a customer refused to pay for his meal in the cafeteria.

Also in the past two weeks, eight traffic accidents furthered
the bad reputation of Los Angeles drivers. Two of these accidents
involved a university vehicle.

Not even parked cars were safe, with three incidents of
misdemeanor hit and run, two cases of grand theft auto and five car
burglaries, including three stolen parking permits.

Bicyclists fared little better with six bike traffic stops.

Last week, three men decided to take a shopping trip that landed
them in jail.

James Johnson, 32, and two other unidentified men were detained
by Macy’s security after attempting to redeem gift certificates
purchased with a stolen credit card.

The men were later picked up by LAPD officers.

Additionally, in the medical plaza, a suspect bought $135 worth
of merchandise with a check that was later cancelled.
