The women’s basketball team offered a glimpse of what lies ahead
in the upcoming season in front of family, friends and students
during Preview Day at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday.

Scrimmages accounted for the majority of the day’s
activities.

The women’s team played against a practice squad comprised of
men. A constantly hustling women’s team played tough defense,
resulting in a 39 to 14 victory.

"They looked great," head coach Kathy Olivier said of her team’s
performance.

Other events included on the schedule were basketball shooting
contests for children and a three point contest for co-ed teams
comprised of players from the men’s and women’s teams.

Freshman Kristee Porter of the women’s volleyball team and
senior Cade McNown of the football team were also honored as
athletes of the month for October.

Much to the delight of the basketball players, many of their
families attended the event.

"Most of these families were locals," said Olivier.

Some of the players, however, are not as fortunate. Junior Janae
Hubbard’s parents had to travel from Fresno to see her play. It is
a highlight for her when her family attends the games because she
rarely gets a chance to see them at all.

"My parents have really been supportive of me throughout my
whole career," Hubbard said, "and that’s really kept me
motivated."

Olivier said she believes that family and fan support is
important to the players.

"I think the support of the fans is great, the community, I
mean, that’s something that we’re really pushing. Hopefully we’ll
see everyone out for the Connecticut game and the games to
come."

The first regular season home game for the women’s team is on
Nov. 17, against Connecticut.
