Through the rain, wind and cold, the No. 24 ranked UCLA women’s
golf team shot its way to an eighth place finish at the OSU/SMU
Regional Challenge Feb. 8-10.
In the first round the sun was shining, and the putts were
sinking for UCLA, which, at the end of the day, led the pack by
five shots with a score of 294, only 10 over par.
Giulia Sergas, a sophomore from Italy golfing in her first
tournament for UCLA, finished the first round tied for third with a
par even 71.
"The first round was the easiest," said coach Jackie
Tobian-Steinmann. "We had a good round … the best of the whole
tournament."
But, as the weather deteriorated, so did UCLA’s performance.
"We were deluged with rain," said Tobian-Steinmann. "It was cold
and wet and pouring. The wind was blowing … and the whole field
didn’t play well."
Yet no other team seemed to fair as badly as UCLA. After the
second round, UCLA had dropped to sixth, tied with Arizona. Nine
off the lead, the Bruins had added 19 strokes to the previous day’s
score to give them a total of 607. By the end of the tournament,
UCLA sat in eighth place with 924, 23 strokes off champion
Georgia.
Tobian-Steinmann places some of the blame on the weather.
"The second and third days we were the last team out (on the
course)," she said. "We were in a downpour. It was miserable,
especially because we were in it the most."
She doesn’t consider the team’s fall very important, though.
Despite finishing in the 24th spot, UCLA showed that it could
compete with teams which ranked much higher.
"We beat TCU (Texas Christian University) and they’re ranked
eighth," said Tobian-Steinmann. "I don’t feel bad (about) how the
team played at all. I think we played well."
