GSA Candidate Statements

Kinshasa Theresa Curl

Currently, I am a first-year master’s student in the
department of urban planning.

I originally began my academic career at a community college. At
Evergreen Valley College, I served as the California Students
Association of Community Colleges Representative. In this position,
I assisted in lobbying for community college students’
interests in the California state legislature.

I went on to complete my undergraduate degree in politics and
legal studies at UC Santa Cruz, where I served on various campus
committees.

Since my enrollment in the urban planning program at UCLA, I,
along with other dedicated students, revitalized the Planners of
Color for Social Equity organization. PCSE has been working with
our department to improve the outreach and recruitment of new
students, particularly students of color.

My experience as the co-chair of PCSE, as well as the other
positions I have held throughout my academic career, has without a
doubt prepared me to serve graduate students as the Vice President
““ External of the Graduate Student Association. I will ensure
that graduate students are adequately represented within the
University of California Students Association.

In the coming years and beyond, it is going to be very important
to sharpen system-wide campaigning and advocacy, for graduates as
much as for undergraduates, to deal with the implications of Tidal
Wave 2, graduate student diversity and other key issues.

UCSA is a valuable resource for all UC students, and I want to
use the Vice President ““ External position to keep GSA at the
forefront of system-wide dialogue.
