Field hockey wins league crown
The women’s field hockey showdown at Moorpark turned out
to be an all-UC affair as UCLA defeated the No. 1 UCSB Gauchos 1-0
to win the Spring League Championship.
The Bruins combined tough defense with a balanced offensive
attack to win the title.
The lone goal of the match came in the first five minutes as
forward Carol Chi rebounded a Marissa Sandoval shot and directed it
past the Gaucho defender for a score.
The Bruin defense tightened down for the rest of the game,
managing to keep the Gauchos’ dangerous attack confined to
the midfield. Goalie Jacklyn Miri shut out the Gauchos, clamping
down on all shots that found a way to get through the
defenders.
The only bad news for the Bruins on the day was a minor injury
to center-defender Madeleine Low, who was hit by a ball.
The victory ends the spring season for the Bruins, who are
looking to build on their championship season and establish
themselves as one of the elite teams in the west.
Men’s crew takes title in Sacramento
The so-called “left coast” or West Coast teams
fought to be the best in the region last weekend as the crew teams
competed in conference championships. The Men’s Novice 4 team
brought home the first gold in UCLA history as the Bruins won in
dominating fashion.
The Bruins have been competing since just after the Title IX era
began in 1974 but had never brought home a championship in the
sport.
