Bruin Rojer named ITA’s Region VIII Rookie of the Year
UCLA freshman tennis player Jean-Julien Rojer was chosen as the
Region VIII Rookie of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association announced May 17.
Rojer, a freshman from Curacao, Netherlands-Antilles, added the
ITA award to a growing list of accolades that included being
honored as the Pac-10’s Freshman of the Year earlier this
month. He was also a second-team All-Pac-10 selection.
Rojer was the Bruins’ top singles finisher in the Pac-10
Individual Championships, held earlier this month in Ojai. He
advanced to the semifinals there before falling to Stanford’s
Alex Kim.
Rojer’s season finished Sunday at the NCAA Championships
in Athens, Ga., where the second-seeded Bruins fell in the
quarterfinals to Tennessee. He won his doubles match with Jean-Noel
Grinda in the quarters but lost his singles match in straight sets,
winning only one game from Volunteer All-American Peter
Handoyo.
