Bruins still behind

Despite their sweep of the Bay Area schools at Pauley Pavilion
last week, the Bruins remain one game behind both USC and Arizona,
as both schools also swept last weekend. UCLA has one game
remaining with each of those teams, both at Pauley Pavilion. The
Bruins’ matchup with USC again on Nov. 3 and look to complete
the Arizona sweep Nov. 11. UCLA lost a four-game match to USC on
Oct. 6 and defeated Arizona in five games on Oct. 12.

Selsor climbing the charts

Junior Erika Selsor had 69 assists in UCLA’s two matches
last week. Her stats against Cal not only put her over the 4,000
mark for her career, but also put her just 51 assists behind Julie
Bremner (“˜93) for second place on the UCLA all-time list.
Given Selsor’s average, 13.79 sets per game, she should pass
Bremner next weekend against the Oregon schools. Ann Boyer
(“˜88) is number one all-time with 5,667.

Rylander makes the marks

Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Rylander set new career highs
with nine assists and 12 digs versus Cal. She is among five
freshmen to record stats so far this season.

Bruins sweep the NorCals

For the first time since 1993, the Bruins won all four matches
against Cal and Stanford. Between 1993 and 2000, the Bruins had but
one win versus Stanford. UCLA also kept its perfect record against
the Golden Bears intact. UCLA’s overall record against Cal is
not 38-0.

Porter honored

For the second time this year, junior outside hitter Kristee
Porter earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors. She had at least 30
kills and 20 digs in each match against Arizona and Arizona State
last week.

Bruins break out the brooms

Of their nine Pac-10 wins, six of the Bruins’ wins have
been sweeps. In addition to that, the Bruins have not been swept in
a conference game this season. The only time they lost in three
games all year was at No. 6 Hawaii on Sept. 4.

Looking ahead

UCLA’s next two opponents, Oregon and Oregon State, faced
each other in the “Civil War” last week, with Oregon
winning in three games.

The Bruins look to avenge their first-ever loss to the Oregon
State Beavers earlier this season with a win at Corvallis Friday.
UCLA lost to OSU (15-7, 5-5 Pac-10) in five games on Sept. 28. UCLA
will be looking for its second win over Oregon (9-10, 1-9) this
Saturday in Eugene. The first was a sweep at Pauley Pavilion on
Sept. 29.
