Three throwers go to World Championships

UCLA track and field sophomore throwers Dan Ames and Carri Soong
and freshman Jessica Cosby competed in the World Junior Track and
Field Championships held in Santiago, Chile from Oct. 17-22.

Ames qualified for the finals of the discus throw by placing
third in his flight with a mark of 175-11. He finished ninth in the
finals with his throw of 169-3.

Soong took 11th in the women’s hammer competition with a
mark of 178-7. Soong had qualified for the finals by placing third
in her flight with a throw of 191.

Cosby finished ninth in the women’s shot put with a mark
of 48-11 3/4. In her senior year at Cleveland high school in
Reseda, Cosby was selected as a prep All-American by Track and
Field News.

The trio also placed well at the U.S. Junior meet held in June.
Soong took first the women’s hammer throw with her throw of
194-10, Ames placed first in the men’s discus and second in
the shot put with marks of 189-8 and 58-8 1/2, respectively. Cosby
took second in the women’s shot put with her throw of 50-3
1/2.
