Fresh perspectives, lobbying will better serve undergrads at UCLA

Activist aspires to increase grants, stabilize tuition, foster unity on campus as EVP

Susan Sheybani Sheybani is a fourth-year
political science student.

There is a political faction on campus that has held the
majority of offices in USAC far too long. The interests of most of
UCLA’s students have been set aside by personal
interests.

USAC needs change, and new people with fresh ideas are needed. I
am looking to reshape the office of the External Vice President to
bring it back to the students.

Issues, such as an increase in grants, fund allocation equality
for all student groups, stabilization of tuition fees, the
promotion of diversity, and campus unity are the topics that need
to be addressed.

With an uncompromising will and focused desire, I will use my
experience as a lobbyist for student rights to benefit the
undergraduate population at UCLA. Having been a recognized delegate
of both statewide and national student organizations, such as the
California Students Association of Community Colleges and American
Students Association of Community Colleges, I am well versed with
the inner workings of political systems and student
associations.

I have participated in a California state “Lobby
Day” with other student activists, and lobbied for increased
funding for state and federal grants, specifically the Pell Grant.
Moreover, I have had the privilege of learning a great deal from
working as a research assistant at a prominent think tank in
Washington, D.C. Further, I have interned for members of Congress
at local and national offices.

Therefore, my experience and legislative contacts make me an
effective lobbyist for the needs of UCLA students. The opportunity
to once again serve as a student representative is one that I
wholeheartedly cherish. Together, with your support, we will bring
back our proud Bruin tradition of effective student
representation.
