CRIME WATCH

Petty thefts Two parking permits, one cellular
phone, and several wallets and backpacks were stolen this past
period. The total loss was $540. A key and pager worth a total of
$20 were stolen from the Communications Technology Services office
between Dec. 28 and Jan. 3.

Grand thefts Police received a report Thursday
that someone stole a bag containing $470 worth of items at the
Medical Plaza. Someone stole surgical equipment from the UCLA Santa
Monica Hospital between Dec. 26 and Jan. 3. There was no sign of
forced entry, and the loss is unknown.

Miscellaneous There were 106 traffic stops this
past period. A man was pounding on a vehicle and asking for money
outside Bank of America on the 900 block of Broxton Avenue after
midnight Monday. Someone threw a billiard ball through a window on
the 600 block of Gayley Avenue at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Police
interrupted a couple in a vehicle in Lot 6 Friday and warned them
against lewd conduct. That same night, police arrested a girl on
the fourth floor of Hedrick Hall after smelling marijuana from her
room. Also on Friday, police received a secondhand report of two
men fighting on the 500 block of Westwood Boulevard. At the police
station, both men were warned and advised against disturbing the
peace. An LAPD broadcast reported an aggressive panhandler on the
11900 block of Wilshire Boulevard who threatened to use a knife on
people Wednesday evening. Police stopped a man Thursday at the
BioMedical Library for having possibly sent out spam e-mails while
logging on as another student. Police received a report at 11:16
p.m. on Jan. 2 of a Beverly Hills cab driver disputing with a
customer who refused to pay the fare on Hilgard Avenue. That same
night, police warned and advised two people against having an open
container in a vehicle parked near Murphy Hall at 3:41 a.m. on Jan.
2. Also, a woman with two Orange County misdemeanor warrants was
arrested and transported to Twin Towers in downtown L.A. Bail was
set at $35,000.
