Lampley named Player of the Week

On Monday, California senior forward Sean Lampley was named the
men’s basketball Conference Player of the Week for Jan.
22-28.

Lampley averaged a double-double in a pair of road victories
against the Washington schools last week. On Thursday, he has a
season-high of 27 points and 12 rebounds in a victory at Washington
State.

“The urgency of our team when we are down in the game was
really something,” Cal head coach Ben Braun said afterwards.
“If we were going to make a surge, (Lampley) was going to be
the guy that makes it happen.”

“They had a better player on their team than we had on our
team and that’s what it came down to,” WSU coach Paul
Graham said.

Lampley followed up with a 21-point, 11-rebound effort to claim
a victory over Washington on Saturday. He was 16 for 21 from the
free throw line for the weekend.

His averages of 24 points and 11.5 rebounds helped secure the
24th Player of the Week honor ever for California.

Stanford remains in top spot

Stanford retained the top spot in both the Associated Press and
ESPN/USA Today Top 25 national rankings this week after a sweep of
the Washington schools. The Cardinal remains the only undefeated
school in the Pac-10 and Division I men’s basketball.

The team got 65 first-place votes in the AP poll, while grabbing
28 such votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Atlantic Coast Conference
power Duke remains on the heels of the Cardinal, playing runner-up
in both polls with five and three first place votes,
respectively.

“The likelihood of us going undefeated all season is very
remote,” Stanford senior forward Jarron Collins said.
“But our philosophy is it’s not going to be the next
game.”

The Cardinal currently holds the highest Ratings Percentage
Index (RPI) in the country, and also has the 26th strongest
schedule. The RPI is a strong indicator in determining the Field of
64 for the NCAA Tournament. Stanford host No. 21 Southern
California and UCLA this week in Palo Alto’s Maples
Pavilion.
