Mitchell signs with Eagles
Last season, he was Cory Paus’ favorite target. This year,
he looks to have the same role with Donovan McNabb.
On Wednesday, Freddie Mitchell signed a six-year contract with
the Philadelphia Eagles worth $5.5 million, including a signing
bonus of $3.5 million. The contract was signed hours before he and
other rookies were due to report to training camp.
The UCLA standout was the 25th overall pick in this year’s
NFL draft, and will be expected to make an immediate impact with
the Eagles. Since head coach Andy Reid overhauled the wide receiver
position in the offseason by cutting starters Charles Johnson and
Torrance Small, Mitchell has become a preseason favorite to become
a starter this season.
Bruins to show appreciation
UCLA has scheduled its 2001 Football Fan Appreciation Day for
Saturday afternoon, August 18 at Drake Stadium.
This will be the first chance for fans to check out the new
squad before the season begins. Admission is free.
Taylor fails to gain college eligibility
Junior Taylor, a 6-foot-2, 185 pound wide receiver out of Mesa
(AZ) High School, will not be joining the Bruin football team in
the fall. UCLA voided the National Letter-of-Intent that Taylor
signed in February because the heavily recruited high school star
did not meet NCAA initial eligibility requirements.
The news comes only weeks after the UCLA Athletic Department
announced that 6-foot-11 Michael Fey, one of the prized recruits
for the men’s basketball team, could not get the required ACT
scores he needed to meet eligibility requirements.
Taylor, part of a Bruin recruiting class that was consistently
ranked among the top-ten in the nation by most publications, was
regarded as one of the top-ten high school receivers in the
nation.
According to the Taylor family, Junior plans to continue
attempting to meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.
