Rules to change for women’s
volleyball

The National Association for Girls and Women in Sports has
adopted several major rule changes in hopes of speeding up
volleyball games.

A server now has eight seconds, with one chance, to serve the
ball. Last year, the server had five seconds to serve after a
signal from the official, but if she didn’t like her first
toss, she could let the ball drop and get another chance to
serve.

Also, a serve will now count even if it touches the net and
continues to the other side. Before, a “let serve” was
an error.

The women’s game will also adopt the rally scoring format
that the men’s game began using last season.

Every serve will now result in a point, regardless of which team
is serving. Last season, only the fifth game used this format.

The last major rule change is known as the international pursuit
rule. As long a player does not touch the opponent’s
in-bounds area, she can chase down a ball that sails on the
out-of-bounds side of the antenna and to the out-of-bounds side of
the other half of the court.

However, both coaches must agree before the match to use this
rule, as it is experimental for this season.

Two Bruins part of Wooden Award list

Senior center Dan Gadzuric and junior forward Jason Kapono have
been named among the 50 preseason candidates for the John R. Wooden
Award. The award is given to the nation’s top men’s
basketball player annually. The winner of the award will be
announced on April 7, 2002.
