In this issue, we recognize the attack of Sept. 11 by reflecting
on that moment.
This moment moved us in a new direction. It transformed
everything about the way we work, live and see the world.
Seldom are there moments that affect everyone. This one did.
In life we face moments that are important to us. Some are life
changing, some are moments in history never to be forgotten.
For people, the moments we live through are all we have. They
define us. They’re what we live for.
They deserve to be captured.
As a newspaper, that’s what we do. We capture the moments
that are important to history and to our community.
It may be impossible for us to capture all the moments, or to
capture them for what they truly are. News is simply a shadow of
the recent past.
But there are some things we do capture.
Right and wrong are difficult to mask.
When you pick up a paper you hold responsibility in your
hands.
Throughout this year, we’re going to remind you of those
moments. We will try to represent them and make you think about
them.
You have a chance to read about these moments of triumph and
loss.
And you have a chance to do something about them.
The emotions, the thoughts, they all rest within you ““ the
person making the news, living life and changing the world.
You record a living history in a more fundamental way than any
newspaper.
These moments live on in your thoughts, emotions and how you
interact with the world.
Your children, friends, family and co-workers understand you
better than The Bruin or any newspaper. They’re the ones
affected by the moments you live through.
So we’re not perfect. We can’t be. But we can do
better.
Tell us your stories. Help us see them through your eyes, help
us speak of them in your voice.
Let us know what’s important to you and remind us when we
missed a moment.
Pay attention to the world as it passes. Learn from other
people’s moments. Feel what they’re feeling. Try and do
something about what you see and what we help you to see.
Even if it’s just for a moment.
