Speaks Out

Has your view of the world changed in light of all the
events related to the Sept. 11 attacks?
Martin
Callan
UCLA employee “I don’t think it has
because I was sort of expecting something like this to happen
someday, not this bad, but something. If they can do it in France,
Italy, they can do it here.” Mayank Chawla
Third-year Sociology “One of the things I have really
realized is how people can take something that is so horrible and
do horrible things on top of it after the attack … the way people
were retaliating against Muslims or people who are Middle
Eastern.” Claire Chik Lecturer Applied
linguistics “Americans have changed in the sense that they
don’t feel they are isolated from the rest of the world. They
thought they could fight wars at arms’ length. The
world’s problems were at arms’ length. Globalization
has come to terrorism as well.” George
Edmondson
Graduate student English “All of my
feelings about the world have been confirmed. That is to say, I
always figured the world was a treacherous place, full of people
who hated the United States for many legitimate reasons.”
Corey Hogan Fifth-year Music performance and
education “It just helped me to realize that there are people
in this world that really hate America. I just never really
realized that at first. I hear people talk about it, but there was
no evidence that it was true. Now that this has happened, it has
made me realize that we are really not loved by everyone ““
that Americans are hated by many in this world.” Jeff
Seymour
UC alumni regent “There’s this feeling
of loss, a feeling of sadness, a feeling of anger. It’s all
these mixes of emotions. But I think out of this will come
understanding. We’ve got to move on and ensure this
doesn’t happen again.” Compiled by Rachel Makabi, Daily
