Do you think UCLA has too many General Education
Requirements? Annie Chiu ourth-year
Biochemistry “No, I don’t believe UCLA has too many GE
requirements because they serve to broaden everyone’s
horizons and to make everyone aware of the different subjects you
can learn. I like taking GEs because they help me learn about
things outside of my science major, like musicology, history and
poetry ““ they serve a positive purpose.” Jake
Loughridge Third-year Business economics “I think
that six science GEs for a non-science major might be a little too
much. On the one hand, you don’t want a student who comes to
UCLA to not have a wide breadth of knowledge in the sciences, but I
think the same job could be done with four or five general
introductory classes. Though I don’t mind taking science
classes, I’d rather take more classes within my major that
I’d be more interested in.” Oliver Jackson
II Second-year Computer science “There are some GEs
you can do without. The life sciences you can do without ““
the physical sciences you can live with. But you really don’t
need these classes, they’re just in your way. You really want
to concentrate on you major in college, and all GEs do is bring
your GPA down ““ they hurt more than they help. GEs are not
that important ““ they’re just like high school and
we’ve learned enough from that.” Lina
Lee Fifth-year Economics “I actually enjoyed taking
all the GE classes. You get to learn a broad range of things from
classes that I would never think of taking if it wasn’t
required ““ I realize I got a broader education from GEs. I
would never take any life sciences classes, but since I was
required, I learned interesting things from them.” Speaks Out
