the Daily Bruin Editorial Board. All other columns, letters and

Though UCLA is trying to alleviate the desperate need for
parking by building a new lot under the Intramural Field, the
administration has shafted students during the construction
process.

Instead of hauling dirt out the quickest route available ““
down Sunset Boulevard ““ administrators have routed the trucks
through one of the busiest areas of campus: Charles E. Young Drive
West, delaying students both on foot and in cars trying to get to
class.

This is a perfect example of what happens when students are
virtually ignored in the decision-making process.

It’s ridiculous that students now have to leave their
homes over an hour before class starts just to avoid construction
traffic ““ not to mention the risk of being hit by a truck,
the effects of the dirt on student health or the loss of sleep the
trucks’ noise causes when they start rolling at 6 a.m.and
continue every three minutes until 3:30 p.m.

If someone were to be hit by a truck, there’s no doubt the
university would change their policy immediately. Unfortunately,
that’s probably what it would take.

Undergraduate Students Association Council facilities
commissioner Jeremy McKenzie should make changing this route his
top priority. Students elected him to represent their interests to
the administration and to effect as much change as possible. If he
fails to do this, he fails the student body.

It’s up to our student government to make sure students
have a voice in decisions that affect their living conditions.

Just because students are temporary residents doesn’t mean
that they should take the hit for every university project.

Someone seems to have forgotten the adage “The shortest
distance between two points is a straight line.” Instead, the
shortest way to move a massive truck full of dirt is to drive it
through every densely populated street, crosswalk and footpath UCLA
students depend on to get to school.
