Speaks Out

On Sunday morning, America responded to the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks by launching an air campaign against al-Qaeda
terrorist camps and Taliban military installations in Afghanistan.
What are your thoughts on America’s military
actions?
Austin Forsyth Second-year
graduate Anderson School “I think that we don’t have a
very good understanding of Afghanistan. If we really want to deal
with the root causes of what happened on Sept. 11 that’s
going to involve a lot more than a bunch of cruise missiles.
It’s going to involve addressing the fundamental issues of
about how the United States is perceived, especially by most of the
Islamic world.” Sharone Hasse First-year
Political science “Honestly, I think it’s about time.
Obviously (the government has) taken this much time and effort to
find the people that did this to us; they need to bring them in and
we need to get them back ““ it’s just wrong what they
did in the first place.” Hensley Jemmott
UCLA Extension “Plain and simple, I hope it gets the job
done. If the evidence says that Osama bin Laden was responsible for
the attacks on Sept. 11, then America is justified in going after
him and his organization.” Lara Pierpoint
Second-year Astrophysics “I think that to some extent they
definitely are because there needs to be some retaliation. The
Taliban and their lack of cooperation with the government demands
some sort of response. I think that maybe more thought should have
been given to something that may be a little more effective than
just bombing a lot of people.” Darnetta
Smith
Second-year Business economics “I’m not
sure because they say they have proof that Afghanistan was behind
this. If they do, then yes. If they have proof they were attacking
us for no reason, then attack back, but I’m not sure if they
really should have started a war.” Gopinath
Warrier
Post-doctoral student Mechanical and aerospace
engineering “I think it was right and as long as they
don’t get too many civilians, there are going to be some
casualties, but I think they deserve it.” Speaks Out compiled
