Stanford starting quarterback Randy Fasani will not play UCLA
this weekend due to a sprained right knee, the university announced
Tuesday.
Fasani was injured in the second quarter of Stanford’s
49-42 upset of Oregon on Saturday. The backup quarterback,
sophomore Chris Lewis, pulled out the comeback victory for the
Cardinal.
Stanford will be the third team in as many weeks to start a
backup quarterback against UCLA. Although UCLA kept Washington and
Cal’s backups off their game, things may be a little
different in Palo Alto.
“Fasani and Lewis are both outstanding,” UCLA head
coach Toledo said. “Lewis is a veteran, he played last year
and he brought them from behind last week.”
Both Fasani and Lewis were among the top quarterback recruits in
the nation as high school seniors.
With Lewis under center, UCLA will have to change its game plan
to account for the difference in style between the two
quarterbacks.
“Fasani likes to run around more; Lewis likes to stay in
the pocket and throw,” UCLA defensive coordinator Phil Snow
said.
Fasani, a senior, will be out 4 to 6 weeks. He missed much of
last season with injuries to his other knee.
Prior to this weekend’s injury, Fasani was a finalist for
the Unitas award, given to the nation’s top quarterback.
Fasani has a 156.54 quarterback rating, with a 54.1 completion
percentage and 1064 yards passing, as well as 112 yards
rushing.
