Trick-or-treating in the dorms

The 13th annual All-Hill Halloween took place in the residence
halls Wednesday for children from some of Los Angeles’
inner-city schools.

More than 2,000 children from about 25 elementary schools and
community service centers from Los Angeles neighborhoods were
bussed to UCLA, where Dr. Seuss characters, cheerleaders and
Supermen made necklaces, masks, buttons and frames before embarking
on the quest for candy.

Volunteer tour guides led groups of kids throughout the Hill.
The residence halls also featured a carnival booth for the
children.

About 3,000 to 4,000 residents participated in the event either
by donating $5 for transportation for the visiting children or
candy for the rooms.

Applications out for LGBT Institute

UCLA’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Leadership
Institute, which will be held March 18-22, 2002, is now accepting
applications. The fee for attending is $4,950 and includes tuition,
books, educational materials, food and lodging.

The program, conducted by Anderson School faculty and LGBT
practitioners, is designed to cultivate leadership and will examine
universal leadership issues and emphasize the challenges LGBT
professionals face in the corporate world.

Children wrongly depicted on TV

Local television news broadcasts underrepresent the presence of
children in society, distort the level of crime committed by and
against children, and rarely focus on public policy issues that
affect American families, according to research by UCLA professor
Franklin Gilliam published in a new Children Now study.

The study found that more than one-third of all stories about
children depict them as victims of crime, contributing to a climate
of fear for children’s safety.

In particular, black and Latino children are depicted in stories
of explicit violence more often than other children, presenting an
incomplete picture often lacking a relevant social and policy
context.
