Champions in Calgary
The UCLA men’s volleyball team captured the Husky Dino Cup
Sunday, defeating tournament host Calgary in four sets 25-17,
25-22, 21-25, 25-22.
After the Dinos had swept the Bruins 25-22, 25-21, 26-24 on
Saturday in the preliminary rounds, UCLA came back to take the
title.
“We got better throughout the tournament,” UCLA head
coach Al Scates said. “I’m happy because it was the
best we’ve played so far this year.”
Sophomore middle blocker Chris Peña was named Tournament
MVP, while freshman outside hitter Jonathan Acosta and junior
setter Rich Nelson earned All-Tournament team honors.
The Bruins who weren’t honored individually still stood
out in Scates’ mind.
“Matt Komer and Adam Shrader did a great job,” he
said.
UCLA easily defeated conference rival Stanford on Saturday night
25-19, 25-21, 25-22 with Cardinal All-American outside hitter Curt
Toppel unable to play due to injuries.Â
The Bruins snuck past Trinity Western 21-25, 25-21, 25-20,
22-25, 15-11 on Sunday morning to advance to the Gold Medal Match
against Calgary.
