PAC-10 FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

No mo’ Holmoe

Tom Holmoe surprised no one on Monday when he announced that he
would resign as head coach of the California Golden Bears at the
end of the season.

Holmoe has led his team to zero victories in eight attempts
through last Saturday’s loss to Arizona. Cal is currently
riding an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season. It is
the longest losing streak in Cal’s 119-year history.

“It’s with deep regret that I arrived at this
decision,” Holmoe said in a statement. “We had great
dreams when we took over the reins here five years ago, and
it’s unfortunate that many of those dreams were not
realized.”

After Cal’s loss to UCLA, Bruin head coach Bob Toledo
offered his condolences for Holmoe’s tough season. Toledo
also said that if he had an opening, he would offer Holmoe a job on
his staff.

Midas touch for Joey?

Oft-promoted Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington is one step
closer to adding hardware to his shelf of magazine covers.

Harrington has been named one of five finalists for the Johnny
Unitas Golden Arm Award, given to the nation’s top senior
quarterback.

Harrington solidified his spot among the finalists with a
school-record six touchdowns against Arizona State.

Cardinal in hospital

Stanford safety Simba Hodari did not come home with his team
after their loss to Washington. Hodari suffered a serious
concussion with 1:34 left in the third quarter last Saturday and
was taken via ambulance to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle,
where he remains today.

Hodari was taken to the hospital in critical condition. As of
Monday, Hodari was alert with full motor function and progressing
well according Harborview medical personnel. It is not yet known
when Hodari will return to Palo Alto.

During the game, Washington players prayed for several minutes
while Hodari was down on the field.
