Leave it to Oregon to help the UCLA women’s volleyball team get
all better. Coming off an upset loss to Oregon State on Monday, the
Bruins were more than happy to play the conference slump-buster to
cap off their regular season.
The No. 11 Bruins took care of business against the Ducks,
defeating them 30-19, 25-30, 30-16, 30-28 Tuesday night at McArthur
Court in Eugene, Ore. The win allows UCLA (18-8, 12-6 Pac-10) to
regain some of its confidence as it heads into the NCAA
Tournament.
"It helps our team morale," UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski
said. "We were very disappointed with our performance against
Oregon State. It’s good to be able to come back with a win to
finish off the season."
The Bruins won with their serve, led by freshman defensive
specialist Chrissie Zartman’s five aces. Senior outside hitter
Ashley Bowles, who earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors earlier in
the day, added four aces to go along with 12 kills and 11 digs.
Junior outside hitter Lauren Fenderick led the Bruins with 19
kills on the night.
With the Ducks (9-20, 0-17) out of the way, the Bruins now await
their first-round playoff matchup. The selection show airs Monday
on Fox Sports West 2 at 12 p.m.
"We don’t care who we play," he said. "We’re ready. We’ll play
hard against whoever we’re put up with." Senior setter Erika
Selsor, who was also named to the All-Pac-10 first-team, is also
confident that her team can do well in the postseason.
"We’re more anxious to see who we play," she said. "A new season
starts, and we know that we can beat anyone."
