Negotiations go on for task force

The South Asian Studies Task force and Pan-Asian group Sangam
held a faculty-student dinner Wednesday night to further promote
their year-long effort to create a South Asian studies minor.

“There is a large body of South Asian students on
campus,” said Vinay Lal, professor of contemporary Indian
history.

“It is reasonable for them to demand the right for
students to get acquainted with South Asian culture and
history,” Lal said.

The task force has goals to set up a South Asian studies major
and center.

No hot water for Sproul Hall

Sproul Hall residents living on the seventh floor were
confronted with not having hot running water from 9:30 a.m. to noon
both Wednesday and Thursday.

“It was really frustrating,” said Nick Dawson, a
second-year computer science student, living in the north end of
the building. “I just had to grit my teeth and go through
it.”

“I heard somebody say to just shower army-style ““
jump right in, then jump out,” said Becky Chaney, a
second-year biology student.

According to Alfred Nam, associate director of room operations
for the housing administration, said a broken valve caused the
problem.

“It was just a fluke. The local plumbers were called in
and they fixed the problem.”

WAC building to be celebrated

More than 200 students, faculty and staff will participate in a
procession from Glorya Kaufman Hall to the new World Arts and
Culture building on Kinross Avenue Friday.

The three-hour ceremony will commence at 9 a.m and is in part a
symbolic “thank you” and “goodbye” to the
Kaufman building, which will undergo a two-year renovation process
this year.

Canada reaches out at gathering

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien took action to
improve trade ties to California, meeting with nearly 500 state
businessmen at a conference at the John Paul Getty Center Thursday
night.

Public policy professor Allen Scott said there is a growing
interest at UCLA for Canadian studies and the School of Public
Policy and Social Research.

The Canadian government donated $250,000 to the establishment of
the Canadian Fund for Endowed Studies at UCLA in September. Scott
will administer the donation.
