Men’s Soccer Briefs


Soccer players take in national scene

Three current members of the UCLA men’s soccer team have
been selected to participate in various U.S. youth national team
training camps, while seven former Bruins will train with the
national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Sophomores Adolfo Gregorio and Alex Yi will train with the U.S.
Under-23 National Team in Claremont, Calif. from Jan. 5-12. Joining
them is former UCLA goalkeeper DJ Countess, who turned pro after
his 2000 freshman campaign.

Freshman Mike Enfield will train with the U.S. U-20 National
Team from Jan. 2-12. The squad plays the Canadian U-20s on Jan. 9
and will also face three regional teams at the ARCO Olympic
Training Center in Chula Vista.

Former Bruins Carlos Bocanegra, Frankie Hejduk, Cobi Jones,
Eddie Lewis, Ante Razov, Nick Rimando and Greg Vanney will also
train in Claremont with the full national team in the 28-man camp.
The team opens Group B play against South Korea on Jan. 19 and
meets Cuba Jan. 21. Both games are at the Rose Bowl.

Seven Bruins part of Team USA core

Five current and two former UCLA softball players will join USA
Softball in the upcoming World Championships in July in Saskatoon,
Canada.

2000 Olympian Stacy Nuveman, Toria Auelua, Amanda Freed, Tairia
Mims and Natasha Watley are the five current Bruins who will move
on to the upcoming World Championship camp in May/June. Lisa
Fernandez, also a 2000 Olympian, and Courtney Dale are the former
Bruins who were selected to the 22-player core after a three-day
tryout camp in Chula Vista, Calif.

The USA Softball Women’s National Team has won the past
four consecutive World Championships, the past four consecutive Pan
Am Games and the past two Olympic gold medals.
