Cory Paus serves 96-hour sentence

Quarterback faces time for driving under the influence

The Associated Press

UCLA quarterback Cory Paus has begun serving his 96-hour
sentence for a misdemeanor conviction of driving under the
influence of alcohol.

Paus checked in Thursday at the Metropolitan Branch of Los
Angeles Superior Court, and was later transported to the Twin
Towers facility in downtown Los Angeles, where he is expected to
remain until Sunday night or Monday morning, prosecuting attorney
Larry Shelley said.

Paus, who made 24 starts in the last three years and has one
season of eligibility remaining, was due to report to jail Tuesday,
but had the date moved up at the request of his attorney, the
district attorney’s office said.

The 21-year-old Paus is also required to pay a $1,332 fine,
enroll in an 18-month alcohol-diversion program and his driving is
restricted to and from campus. He is also on probation for five
years.

The offense was his second in the last two years.

UCLA coach Bob Toledo learned of Paus’ convictions from
reporters two days before the Bruins were beaten 27-0 by crosstown
rival Southern California. Paus started that game, but was demoted
to third string for the Bruins’ final game, and Toledo said
the starting quarterback job is wide-open for next year.
