West wins inaugural Paradise Bowl


Bruin aids in 33-30 close victory over Utah-Colorado

ST. GEORGE, Utah “”mdash; UCLA’s Scott McEwan threw two
fourth-quarter scoring passes and USC’s David Newbury kicked
a 21-yard field goal in the second overtime as the West beat
Utah-Colorado 33-30 Saturday in the inaugural Paradise Bowl.

The game matched players from schools around the West, drawing
on the Pac-10, Western Athletic, Mountain West and Big Sky
conferences.

Utah-Colorado led 30-14 after Air Force’s Keith Boyea
threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Utah’s Dennis Smith with 4:52
remaining.

McEwan directed a comeback, throwing to Derrick Lewis of San
Diego State for a 20-yard TD and then connecting with Ryan Dennard
of Arizona State on the 2-point conversion to make it 30-22 with
2:29 to play.

After the West recovered an onside kick, McEwan and Lewis hooked
up again on a 6-yard TD pass with 1:28 left. McEwan teamed with
Lewis on the 2-point conversion to tie it at 30.

McEwan, a fifth-year senior who led UCLA to a 52-42 win over
Arizona State in his first career start last month, completed
16-of-24 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns.
