We’re No. 1
The UCLA men’s volleyball team found itself atop the USA
Today/AVCA Coaches poll Tuesday with 14 of 16 first-place
votes.
“The coaches have to vote us No. 1,” head coach Al
Scates said. “We just beat two of the top teams in the
nation.”
With wins over previously top-ranked Penn State and No. 5
Hawai’i, the Bruins (5-1) are for now, statistically, the
best team in college volleyball.
Stanford, Pepperdine, Hawai’i and BYU round out the Top 5.
Defending national champion BYU and a 5-0 UC Santa Barbara team
received the other first-place votes.
Morrow injured
Junior middle blocker Scott Morrow suffered a sprained left
thumb in practice last Wednesday in Hawai’i. He tore
ligaments in the thumb and will have to deal with the injury for
the rest of the season. He is not expected to miss any playing
time.
Morrow played sparingly throughout last weekend’s
tournament, but he saved his best match for Hawai’i on
Saturday, contributing five block assists.
Homecoming
Freshman opposite hitter Brennan Prahler made his NCAA debut in
familiar setting.
A Honolulu native, Prahler came into the third game of match
against Hawai’i to play in front of a crowd of 7,148 that
included family and friends.
Prahler made the most of his time on the floor, registering his
first career kill, dig and block as a Bruin. His block of
Hawai’i All-American Costas Theocharidis’ attack came
at a crucial point in the match.
