The UCLA women’s golf team placed eighth in its winter
opener in Palos Verdes, Calif. The Bruins were competing in a tough
field, including 15 of the nation’s top 25 teams at the
seventh annual TRW Regional Challenge.
Last year, UCLA placed 15th in the tournament. The Bruins placed
ahead of both No. 3 Ohio State and No. 5 Georgia. The Bruins’
success should improve upon their national ranking, which is
currently 24th.
UCLA head coach Carrie Leary said that the three-day tournament
was a good way for teams to “get the rust out,” and
that the team’s eighth-place finish was “not too
bad,” even though she feels they could have played better in
the first round. Leary was pleased with with the play of freshman
Yvonne Choe and sophomore Krystal Shearer, who placed 33rd and 36th
overall, respectively.
No. 2 Tulsa finished first in the tournament, shooting an
overall 870. UCLA finished with a total of 912, four strokes behind
USC. The team is looking forward to its next tournament, the
Arizona Wildcat Invitational in two weeks. The Pac-10 looks to be
an extremely close division this year in which any team can
win.
