The Associated Students of UCLA, which has the largest student
store in the nation, fell short of its $500,000 projection for
Wednesday’s annual Anti-Valentine’s Day Sale by
$54,263.

While many of the departments did well, the Computer Store and
BookZone fell far short of ASUCLA’s expectations, possibly
due to over-aggressive projections, said Keith Schoen, director of
retail operations for ASUCLA, who said he was pleased overall with
sales.

The Computer Store fell short by $12,251. The Computer
Store’s slump in this sale is a continuation of its downward
trend for well over a year, Schoen said. He attributes its decline
to the decreased price of laptops, desk tops, and monitors.

BookZone missed its projection of $55,000 by $10,093. Schoen is
not concerned about BookZone because its revenue is about equal to
last year’s, he said.

However, Patrick Healey, the director of apparel and
accessories, said he exceeded his $245,000 expectation by $5,000
for his departments.

“We had a lot of desirable merchandise, and key items like
sweatshirts were well stocked,” Healey said.

Anti-Valentine’s Day Sale.

The Anti-Valentine’s Day Sale was held in the UCLA Store
in Ackerman Union, the Health Sciences Store and LuValle Commons.
Almost everything storewide was discounted 20-50 percent.

To accommodate crowds, ASUCLA added 15 registers and scheduled
40 to 50 additional employees

“I didn’t have to wait as long in line as I did in
the Halloween Sale,” said Michelle Jin, a first-year
undeclared student. “It was a lot less stressful and
hectic.”

The name of the sale ““ coined Anti-Valentine’s Day
because it is not held on the holiday, but the previous day ““
is used because it’s catchy, Schoen said.

The sale is the second largest of three major sales ASUCLA
holds. the Halloween Sale in October and the Sizzling Summer Sale
in May.
