Pleasure didn’t come for UCLA without spikes of pain at
the Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara this weekend.

The Bruins stormed through the first day of the tournament,
leaving Cal Baptist and San Diego State in their wake with scores
of 14-5 and 8-2 respectively.

On Sunday, the Bruins faced USC in the semifinal round.
Goalkeeper Jaime Hipp saved 16 of the Trojans’ 18 shots at
the goal, helping to lead the Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Trojans
in a defensive battle.

“Our defense today was solid,” coach Adam Krikorian
said. “Jaime played incredible. We also had good games from
our two-meter defenders.”

The final saw the Bruins facing Stanford in a rematch of the
Stanford Invitational final, which the Bruins dropped 9-4. In the
first two quarters, the Bruins converted two man-up advantages with
goals from Kelly Heuchan and Natalie Golda, and got another goal
from Amber Stachowski to lead 3-2 at halftime. In the fourth
quarter, the Bruins held the lead at 4-3 with another goal from
Stachowski, but lost the victory when the Cardinal tied it with 48
seconds left.

The Bruins got a goal from Thalia Munro in the first overtime,
but let the game slip with three seconds remaining as the Cardinal
tied the game at five, sending it into sudden death overtime.
Stanford pulled out the 6-5 win on a goal by Brenda Villa. The
Bruins will get an opportunity for payback against Stanford next
weekend in a conference game at home Sunday.
