Men’s golf got a glimpse of their bright future late last
week as freshman John Poucher led the Bruins to an eighth place
finish at the John A. Burns invitational in Hawaii. Poucher
finished 18th overall in the tournament won by San Diego State. The
Bruins finished with a 54-hole total of 879, 15-over par.

Senior Parker McLachlin and sophomore Steve Conway tied for 26th
place, while freshman Breene Murphy took 52nd place and sophomore
John Merrick took 70th.

Head coach Brad Sherfy said Poucher’s solid play was
“impressive, he didn’t miss a beat.”

Poucher is in a group of many young, talented players, whom the
Bruins will be building their future around. This core of players
will consist of probable future academic All-Americans Travis
Johnson and Breene Murphy, along with Poucher, John Merrick and top
recruit Spencer Levine.

Sherfy believes that the young team is closer this year than
they were last year to competing for a top spot at the nationals,
but that the hard-working players still need more tournament
experience.

“They should be contending from here on out,” he
said. “They could be one of the best teams in the
west.”
