UCR professor decries “˜9-11′

Now that “9-11″ is being uttered by the nation as
shorthand for terrorism, Edward Chang, an associate professor of
Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Riverside, fears
that mainstream American culture will turn away from another
important date: “4-29″ the date 10 years ago when fires
and chaos broke out in South Central Los Angeles.

Just saying the date “4-29″ in Korean, Sa-I-gu
(saw-ee-goo) is shorthand for the devastating affects on the
Korean-American community of the Los Angeles civil unrest. For
Chang, it is also shorthand for the important issue of racial
injustice. It would be a mistake to forget, he said.

Recognized as a leading expert on the events of April 29, 1992,
Chang said the nation needs to remember the anniversary of the
violence, and take stock of what progress has been made in race
relations.

“The underlying socioeconomic factors have not changed at
all,” he said. “There has not been major investment in
inner city Los Angeles.”

He said there is some hope. For instance, he said, relationships
between Korean merchants and their African-American customers are
better now than they were before the civil unrest.

Degreee important for trainers

Researchers with the UCLA Exercise Physiology Research
Laboratory found those personal trainers with bachelor’s
degrees in exercise science and certification by the American
College of Sports Medicine or the National Strength and
Conditioning Association had the highest level of knowledge,
compared to personal trainers with years of experience or other
certifications.

The Inland Empire participants filled out a form with background
information and took the Fitness Instructors Knowledge Assessment,
a questionnaire researchers developed for the study.

As predicted, a personal trainer’s years of experience did not
translate into more knowledge. In fact, personal trainers with five
or more years of experience had no greater knowledge than trainers
with four or fewer years of experience.

Proulx to speak at event on campus

UCLA Live presents a conversation between Pulitzer Prize-winning
authors Annie Proulx and Jack Miles at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April
25, at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse. This UCLA exclusive
conversation features an onstage interview with Proulx hosted by
Miles, followed by a short reading, and ending with a 15-minute
question-and-answer segment with the audience.

Proulx took on fiction writing well after she was into her
50s,and became the first woman to win the prestigious PEN/Faulkner
Award for her debut novel, “Postcards” (1992).

In 1994 “The Shipping News” secured her place in the
literary world with a National Book Award as well as a Pulitzer
Prize. Released late last year, the film version of “The
Shipping News” features Kevin Spacey, Judi Dench, Cate
Blanchett and Julianne Moore.
