Facilities Commissioner candidate Annie McElwain has few goals
and even fewer means to carry them out.

An unopposed candidate running on the Students United for Reform
and Equality slate, McElwain cited visibility, safety and
communication as her top priorities.

The facilities commissioner’s duty is self-explanatory
““ “to be concerned with all facilities used by the
students.”

Missing from her agenda are plans for housing, construction and
the improvement of campus facilities.

Ongoing construction ““ which is typically a concern of the
facilities commissioner ““ came up only as an afterthought in
interviews.

“I would like to show students construction can be a more
positive thing,” she said.

Should students have to deal with facilities-related problems,
she said she would inform and educate students about the
problem.

She added she would step up to handle any incidents but only
after asked and even then could not state how.

McElwain also lacked plans for housing, an issue inherent to the
job description.

In regard to the Wooden Center, McElwain ““ who will have a
seat on the center’s decision-making board ““ said
“there’s always room for growth” but could not
articulate what that growth should entail.

Not particularly related to facilities, she did say she’s
a proponent of continuing and increasing students’ awareness
of self-defense programs.

“Especially as women, we really need to take advantage of
this,” she said of the sole pillar in her security plan.

Increased USAC visibility, a goal shared by fellow SURE
candidates, would be accomplished through e-mails and Bruin Walk
office hours.

A newcomer to student government, McElwain said she met SURE
lead man and presidential candidate David Dahle through a
“mutual friend” and then decided to run.

“It sounded like something I wanted to do so I did,”
she said.

When asked why she chose this position, she said the other
positions “just weren’t right for her.”
