Student Welfare Com.: Leyco blind to Student Welfare Commission’s issues, potential

  Crisette Leyco

When asked what the Student Welfare Commission could do to
improve the daily lives of students, candidate Crisette Leyco
responded by saying they keep “condoms and bluebooks”
in their office for students who want them ““ then she added
that few people actually come to get them. This example is
indicative of Leyco’s passive approach to student welfare.
Why not go out on Bruin Walk and pass those things out?

In addition to her hands-off philosophy, Leyco has a limited
view of what this office could do. When asked about the
UCLA’s mandatory Student Health Insurance Plan that has left
many students double-covered at the cost of $535 a year, Leyco had
no idea what the plan was and said insurance issues were not her
responsibility. But clearly student health falls under the purvue
of “wellness.” And this office could include much more
than medical health. It could be about housing situations,
emotional and academic counseling, transportation, diversity and
even more ““ and we shouldn’t forget these things are
the same issues she is expected to vote on as a council member.
Hopefully she’ll educate herself before she takes office.
