Freshman Chrissie Zartman bumped her way into
the doubles final at the World University Games in France
At home in Southern California, UCLA freshman Chrissie Zartman
and USC senior Tracy Lindquist are fierce rivals on the volleyball
court. Overseas, however, the pair put their differences aside long
enough to notch their sixth gold medal and their first ever at the
World University Games in France.
On June 23, the American duo defeated the Germans in the final,
21-10, 21-12, concluding a tournament run in which they were
undefeated and lost only a single game to France. Earlier that day,
they had defeated Mexico, 21-10, 21-14, to advance to the
final.
Zartman and Lindquist are familiar with each other. In 1997,
when Zartman was 13 and Lindquist was 16, they became the youngest
players to ever receive an AAA beach volleyball rating. Since then,
they have won five gold medals in the Junior Olympics. The
tournament is for players who aren’t professionals, but are
too old for the junior volleyball tournaments.
Zartman, a defensive specialist for the Bruin women’s
volleyball team, was not available for comment.
