Speaks out

Noor Ahmed

Second-year Undeclared student

“I think there is a lot more awareness about terrorism.
Honestly I don’t know if things are really getting done in
the Middle East, but people are taking more of an interest in it,
campuses and the youth in general.” Edward Shih

Third-year Economics student

“It has made us more aware of the problems in present day.
There are a lot of terrorists in the Middle East, it has made us
realize what we need to change in our United States policies with
the Middle East. Terrorism is an evil force, we need to combat it,
and destroy it by its roots.” Jeanie Williams

Fourth-year Dance and Sociology student

“I just want it to be pretty much over and done with. I
don’t want the fighting , I don’t believe in that …
but we need to feel that we’re not going to be attacked
again, and if that’s what we need to do, go to war, then
I’m for it. But if there is another way out of it, then I
will support doing that.” Alex Smith

Mathematics Graduate Student

“I’m worried that we are going to start, or that we
already have started, trampling people’s rights in the names
of protection and freedom. I don’t know when we need to act
to stop terrorism before it happens and when we need to wait and
respond.” Kraig Odabashian

Law Student

“It is natural for the United States to promote its own
interests in the region but I also think that there are certain
groups that have been demonized in the American media and that a
more intelligent approach to the war might help guide us as to what
our foreign policy should be in the Middle East.” Matteo
Cesame

Post doctorate Computer science

“I think war is never the right answer. Something should
be done to prevent terrorism other than a war. I think supporting
the countries that don’t have the means of the U.S. or
European countries helps.” Diana Sanchez

Third-year Political science student

“I think that being that Bush right now is wanting to
engage the United States in another war, that Sept. 11 hasn’t
opened the minds of Americans in the way it should have. Instead it
feels like it has only closed us off more, and in a way made us
more ignorant because we’re so inclined and supportive of
going to war now in the Middle East which I think will only make
the problem worse, and lead to more tragedies like Sept. 11.”
John Mathews

Fourth-year Political science student

“I think it’s dangerous to continue a war on
terrorism because terrorism will always exist, and its like a never
ending war. …The things that the administration is doing right
now endanger civil liberties and … it’s hard to reverse
some of the things that the administration is doing.” Tyson
