Speaks out: Awareness of world issues

Have you become more or less aware of world issues since coming
to UCLA? Jenny Altman

Second-year, Political science

“I’m a little bit less aware. My life is centered
around campus, I spend a lot of time here at class, work or the
gym, so I don’t always know what’s going on in the
outside world.” Lizy Bagby

Alumna, Anthropology

“I felt like I was in a community, but if I felt isolated
it was because we spend all our time on school work instead of
watching the news or reading the newspaper.” Ellen Huang

Fourth-year, Biology

“I think I’m aware of what’s going on. In the
dorms you’re more isolated and you have your own little
community, but once you’re in the apartments, you watch the
news and the more upper division classes you have the more informed
you are.” John Lee

Graduate student, Psychology

“When I made the effort to watch the news it was OK, but
usually I don’t care about the stuff. I’d rather pay
attention to Bruin sports.” Sonia Sanchez

First-year, Business economics

“I’m not aware because we don’t have a
television in our room and I don’t read the newspaper. My
only source is the Internet so I don’t get all the
information.” Fahim Farivar

Fourth-year, Business economics

“I think I’m pretty aware. If a person wants to go
out and become more involved in the outside world they can do it.
Some people want to concentrate on academics more than anything
else so they don’t get involved as much.” Ani
Chakryan

Fourth-year, Psychology

“I know what’s going on inside of UCLA, but not
really about the surroundings or the outside environment. Besides
all the studying I do for school, I watch the news but that’s
about it.” Amy Domjan

Fourth-year, MCD Bio

“When I was living in the dorms, I didn’t recognize
the outside world whatsoever. But once you’re in the
apartments, you’re more aware. There’s plenty of
opportunity to be in contact with the outside world, but I think
that UCLA is pretty isolated on the whole.” Speaks out
