Patterson’s future at UCLA in question
Sophomore forward Andre Patterson, who averaged 2.3 points per game
and 2.1 rebounds per game last season, has left UCLA for the fall
quarter and has enrolled in Santa Monica City College. When, or if,
he is able to return depends on his grades from Summer Session C at
UCLA and from SMCC this fall. At the earliest, he will be able to
return for the Pac-10 season in January. If Patterson continues to
struggle academically, however, he might not be able to return to
UCLA at all. Head coach Steve Lavin has refused comment on the
situation until Patterson’s C session grades are available.
Baseball tryouts set for Oct. 14 Before he was
released by the Oakland Athletics with an 0-2 record and a 5.97 ERA
in August, Mike Magnante tried out and earned a spot on the UCLA
baseball team. Try-outs for this year’s Bruin baseball team
will be held on Monday, Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson
Stadium, located on the Veteran’s Administration Facility
near Sepulveda and Constitution Boulevard. All candidates must
obtain and complete a health application form at the Athletic
Training Room in the Acosta Center near Pauley Pavilion. No one
will be permitted to try out without bringing a completed form.

Lee quits women’s volleyball team Stacey
Lee, a junior defensive specialist, quit the team after the Sept.
11 game against the University of San Francisco, which the Bruins
won 3-1. With the addition this year of the libero position, Lee
would likely have seen very little playing time. “Basically
her position disappeared,” head coach Andy Banachowski said.
Highly regarded freshman Chrissie Zartman is expected to replace
Lee in the starting line-up. Compiled by Greg Schain, Colin Yuhl,
and J.P. Hoornstra, Daily Bruin Senior Staff.
