Honors for Kapono

Jason Kapono’s 44-point outburst against Washington State
earned him Pac-10 Player of the Week honors.

UCLA head coach Steve Lavin thinks his new Ryan Walcott-Cedric
Bozeman starting backcourt will continue to benefit Kapono.

“Ryan and Cedric help him because they are two guys that
think pass first,” Lavin said.

Basketball on his Mind

Forward Marcedes Lewis, the tight end for the Las Vegas-Bowl
Champion Bruins, will be available to play in tonight’s game
against USC.

“I don’t know what I can bring yet,” Lewis
said. “I just want to help because I know these guys want to
win.”

Lewis averaged 13 points and eight rebounds a game in his senior
season at Long Beach Poly.

Conference Leaders

After the first week of Pac-10 play, the Bruins lead the
conference in scoring offense (87.5 ppg), field goal percentage
(56.7%), 3-point field goal percentage (55.6%), free throw
percentage (92.3%), assists (40), and defensive rebounds (62).

With a 2-0 record, the team is also tied for first in the
conference with Arizona.

“We have to keep up the positive momentum,” Lavin
said.

Pac-10 Notes

Point guard Will Bynum of Arizona has decided to transfer due to
lack of playing time. Bynum averaged 7.8 points in eight games this
season for the Wildcats … Oregon’s 23-game home winning
streak came to an end last Thursday with an 81-72 loss to Arizona
… Washington State junior guard Marcus Moore is 30 points shy of
1,000 for his career.
