DeLoach named defensive backs coach
Gary DeLoach, originally considered for the defensive
coordinator position, will instead join the staff as a defensive
backs coach.
The hiring likely means the completion of UCLA head coach Karl
Dorrell’s assistant coaching staff, although he could still
add a special teams coach.
DeLoach, who has been a coach for 29 years, has spent the past
three years as the University of North Texas defensive coordinator.
The Mean Green led the Sun Belt Conference in total defense and
allowed over 310 total offensive yards just three times last
season.
In the New Orleans Bowl, DeLoach’s defense stifled the
high-powered Cincinnati offense, holding the Bearcats to just 309
total yards. The Bearcats averaged 385 total yards per game and 30
points per game for the season.
The hiring of the 48-year-old DeLoach gives UCLA a link to
Texas, traditionally a hotbed for topflight high school talent.
DeLoach’s hiring also means that former defensive backs coach
Todd Littlejohn will not rejoin the staff.
DeLoach was not available for comment.
Women’s track No. 3, men’s track No. 18 in
preseason
Trackwire Online released its Trackwire 25, a top 25 poll for
collegiate track, on Monday with UCLA ranked in both the
men’s and women’s polls.
The women’s team was tied for No. 3 with Florida,
receiving 41 votes. LSU and South Carolina finished No. 1 and No.
2, respectively, with 59 and 48 votes.
Last year, the UCLA women’s team finished second at the
NCAA championships, behind South Carolina.
In the same poll, the men’s track team was given the No.
18 ranking. Their 10 votes tied them with Baylor, Texas A&M,
Washington, Nebraska and Manhattan.
LSU was given the No. 1 ranking by the men’s Trackwire 25
with 59 votes.
