Seidman impresses at Senior Bowl
Be it receiving a pass from USC quarterback Carson Palmer or
blocking for Trojan running back Sultan McCullough, at some point
during Saturday’s Senior Bowl, UCLA tight end Mike Seidman
must have seen the irony.
But Seidman put aside any rivalry hatred to improve his NFL
draft stock, and rumor has it that he was successful. Various
publications have noted his ability to catch everything in
sight.
Seidman finished the game with two catches for 19 yards, but
more importantly, he may have enhanced his draft stock with his
ability to block ““ a question mark entering the week.
Prior to the Senior Bowl, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.
predicted that Seidman would be selected in the fourth or fifth
round.
Big recruiting weekend
With only 14 verbal commits so far and the Feb. 5 signing day
looming, the weekend of the 24th is shaping up to be a big weekend.
Expected to visit Westwood include top recruits defensive end
Junior Lemau’u, defensive tackle Kevin Brown and running back
Maurice Drew.
UCLA gets verbals
Bellflower St. John Bosco wide receiver Joe Cowan and running
back teammate Derrick Williams announced their verbal commitments
to UCLA on Tuesday.
Cowan, at 6-foot, 4-inches and 190 pounds, possesses good size
with excellent hands. Williams could end up on the defensive side
of the ball, but he has the speed and agility of a running back as
well.
Last Thursday, the Bruins secured a commitment from Chad Horton,
a 6-foot, 2-inch, 195-pound, hard-hitting safety from Louisiana.
Horton, who was initially wary of UCLA because of its coaching
change, forced 14 fumbles, blocked six kicks during his senior
year, and racked up 127 tackles
CSU coach might follow Kerr
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that UCLA is considering
hiring Colorado State special teams coach Brian Schneider.
He would become the Bruins’ linebacker coach and would be
the second coach from the Colorado State staff to come to Westwood.
The popular Schneider worked last season with Larry Kerr, who was
recently hired as UCLA’s defensive coordinator.
Ex-assistants leaving
Kelly Skipper, UCLA’s former offensive coordinator and
running backs coach has been hired as a running backs coach at
Washington State.
“Washington State has a great program, and I am thrilled
to be a part of (head coach) Bill Doba’s new era,”
Skipper said.
Additionally, former wide receivers coach Ron Caragher has moved
on to Kentucky where he will now coach the running backs.
Only defensive backs coach Todd Littlejohn and linebackers coach
Marc Dove of former head coach Bob Toledo’s staff remain
unemployed. Former quarterbacks coach John Pearce has retired.
