Baseball batters alumni

The professionals came down to Jackie Robinson Stadium on
Saturday to take on the UCLA amateurs, but in the end, the students
had more to teach than their older, wiser counterparts. The 2003
Bruins beat a squad of professional alumni 3-1 in five innings.

Among the former Bruins were Josh Arhart, Ben Francisco, Bill
Scott and Adam Berry, who won the home run contest held earlier in
the day. Troy Glaus, the 2002 World Series MVP, usually plays in
the alumni game, but was unavailable for this year’s
contest.

Ryan McGuire, currently with the Yankees AAA organization at
Columbus hit a two-out double in the first inning for the
Alumni’s only run of the game. Senior outfielder Chad
Concolino tied the game at 1-1 with a home run in his first ever
at-bat as a Bruin. Sophomore shortstop Ryan McCarthy had a
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning, while junior
infielder Brandon Averill completed the scoring with an RBI double
in the fifth.

The pitching was dominated by a pair of freshman, Adam Simon and
Hector Ambriz. Simon, the winning pitcher, gave up one run and
three hits in two innings. Ambriz shut down the opposition in the
final three innings, allowing no-hit ball and striking out
four.

Men’s tennis to host UNLV

The No. 1 Bruins will host UNLV today at 1:30 p.m. UCLA (2-0)
has won both of its matches 7-0 and has all of its starters healthy
now, including senior Rodrigo Grilli, who who played in his first
dual match on Friday.

The Runnin’ Rebels (0-1) are No. 68 in the current
International Tennis Association rankings, and lost their only
match of the season thus far to Pepperdine on Friday, 7-0.

UCLA has won all 11 match-ups with the Rebels in the all-time
series, and that streak is unlikely to end today.

The Bruins feature three of the top 40 players in the nation
including No. 12 Tobias Clemens, who won the Sherwood Collegiate
Cup earlier this month.

While UCLA is heavily favored to defeat the Rebels, the squad
needs a good performance as a tune-up for its match against
defending national champion USC on Friday.

The Bruins won two of the three matches against the No. 7
Trojans last year, and will look to build on that success.
