Speaks out

Would you rather keep the current quarter system or move to the
semester system? Jenna Powers

Second-year, undeclared

“I prefer the quarter system because if I were at a school
on the semester system, where there is more time allowed to slack
off, I would definitely use that time to procrastinate
more.” Tutram Nguyen

Third-year, political science

“I like the quarter system because I am allowed to take a
lot more classes and I don’t know how much longer I’d
be interested in a class past 10 weeks. I guess the only downside
is that midterms come really quickly.” Nashaun Neal

Third-year, political science

“I think no matter what system students go into, they need
to get adjusted to college quickly; that is the bigger issue. With
either quarter or semester systems you still need to buckle down
and get the job done in your classes while you adjust to the
freedoms that come with college.” Payam Safa

Third-year, computer science

“It seems that every other school is on the semester
system, so I think it’s good to be on the quarter system
because it’s unique and there are advantages that other
schools don’t have. It’s beneficial to move faster
through classes especially if you are a quick learner.” Hanni
Rosenfeld

Second-year, world arts and cultures

“I prefer the quarter system because if you are taking a
class that you don’t like, it’s over quickly and there
are more opportunities to explore different subject areas. Even if
there is a class that you like and it’s over in 10 weeks,
there is still time to take other similar classes.” Joon
Yi

Fifth-year, astrophysics

“The quarter system goes by too fast and the semester
system would give us more time to study. On the quarter system, if
I slack off for one week, then a lot of material is already
gone and it’s hard to catch up. In a semester system, there
would be a lot more time to focus on school, and aspects outside of
academics.” Compiled by Kelsey Hicks/Daily Bruin Senior Staff
