Speaks out

Have you ever had a biased professor who prevented you from
learning or enjoying a class? Josh Taylor

Fourth-year, psychology

I had a psychology professor once who was biased. You look to
the professor, who is the expert, for guidance when you are
learning about the subject and it becomes difficult when that
professor is biased because you have to interpret the information
and decide whether it is biased or not. This can put a strain on
learning. Kristen Hansen

Fourth-year, English

In a geography class my professor was obviously liberal and I
felt that he didn’t present the conservative views, like when
he was discussing corporations using sweatshops in other countries
for example. I felt like it was really one-sided so I didn’t
enjoy the class as much as I would have liked. Meryl Ueno

Third-year, communication studies

Every professor is biased because they have to teach a point of
view, but I think that I am just too ignorant to judge whether they
are being biased or not because I always believe everything they
say. Justin Owens

Fourth-year, political science

In my department, I think the political science professors have
been really good about not bringing bias to the classroom. If they
did, I think most students here are mature enough to discern
between fact and bias. Angel Yen

Second-year, physiological science

I have never had a biased professor, but I have had a professor
look down on students. I’m not motivated when a professor is
unapproachable because I feel intimidated, especially when seeking
help. It really shows when a professor is only teaching because
they have to while they are here to research. Katie Rao

Fourth-year, international economics

There was a professor I had for a history class and I thought
she was biased only because it was a class of undergraduate
students and she didn’t really care about our ability to
process knowledge and didn’t think we were capable. The class
could have been really great. Compiled by Kelsey Hicks Photos By
